There’s only one definitive fashion rule when it comes to New Year’s Eve style: Dress like you’re going to a Marc Jacobs party. The iconic designer’s dress code for his Studio 54-themed Fashion Week bash last September quickly went viral, for obvious reasons. To wit:
FUR COATS OVER LINGERIE, LIP GLOSS, JERRY HALL SIDE-SWEPT HAIR, SEQUINS, GOLD LAMÉ TURBANS, PATTI HEARST SYMBIONESE LIBERATION ARMY GEAR, ROGUE, ROLLERINA CHIC, SHEER HAREM PANTS, MINI SKIRTS AND MUSCULAR LEGS, PLATINUM RECORDS AS HEAD GEAR, SEQUINS, GRACE JONES BUTCH REALNESS, GLOSS-Y SKIN, BLEACHED EYEBROWS, SLITS, RIDING IN ON A WHITE HORSE, SEQUINS, SKY HIGH STILETTOS, MIRRORED AVIATORS, METAL MESH, COWL NECKLINE HALTERS, OR EYES OF LAURA MARS CHIC. NO FLAT SHOES. NO MATTE SURFACES. NO NATURAL LOOKS.
The day may never come when we actually get one of these coveted invites (and if we do, likely Jacobs will have moved on to Coal Miner Chic or Creepy Victorian Doll Realness or some such). Still, his bday dress code serves as a reminder that the best way to light up a room on the biggest party night of the year is pounds and pounds of sequins and assorted sparkles.
