Birds of Prey Swoop Into Discovery Green This Month

Birds of prey head to Discovery Green on September 28.

Discovery Green has a great lineup of free, family-friendly weekend events in September. We’ve already marked our calendars, because birds! And picnics!

All your favorite birds of prey will make an appearance at Take Me Outdoors Houston, a celebration of the great outdoors, on September 28, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will be on hand with activities, booths and information about natural resources in Houston. Spoiler alert: they want you to explore nature more.

Master falconer John Karger of Last Chance Forever will bust out the live hawks and raptors at both 11 a.m. and 1 p.m., with incredible birds of prey shows the entire family will love.

Montopolis mesmerizes.

If lounging around listening to free live music on a picnic blanket is more your style, you’ll want to head to Discovery Green the weekend before, on September 21, from 8 to 9:30 p.m. That’s when the park hosts acclaimed classical group Montopolis for a performance of The Legend of Big Bend—a family-friendly multi-media performance that conjures the vast high desert of West Texas and Big Bend National Park through music, video, poetry and storytelling.

Musicians include members of the Austin Symphony, Okkervil River, The Polyphonic Spree and the Tosca String Quartet, which means it’s perfectly acceptable to attend if you’re a highfalutin childless hipster as well. Blankets, lawn chairs and picnics are welcome, and you can also buy food, beer, and wine at the Lake House Café—no glass or outside alcoholic beverages allowed.

Head to discoverygreen.com for more information on their great fall events.
