Roasting weenies.

Want to take your family camping, but have simply no idea what the heck you’re doing?  Meet Texas Outdoor Family, a workshop series run by the camping pros at Texas Parks & Wildlife with one purpose: to prepare families for enjoying the great outdoors with a fun, hands-on approach that introduces kids (and adults) to everything from setting up a tent and starting a fire to learning how to kayak, fish and geocache. If you don’t know what geocaching is, suffice it to say, you could probably use the TPWD’s help.

The workshops begin in early March and run through June. They also start up again in the fall, which in Texas is prime camping season.  There are several overnight workshops here in Houston that still have availability this spring at the following state parks: Galveston Island on March 3, May 12 or June 16; Huntsville on March 24 or April 28; and Brazos Bend on April 7.

The coolest thing about these workshops? You don’t have to bring a tent. You just bring bedding, food and personal items. A $65- $75 workshop fee covers a group of six for a one-night stay, including the campsite, tent, cots and foam sleeping pads, a lantern, camp stove, cooking pots and pans, utensils, and a coffee press.
