Check Out Spring Branch’s Cool New Public Art

‘Pointing’ by local artist Carter Ernest is among the first sculptures in the new Art on Long Point.

As if we needed more proof that Spring Branch is still blossoming into one of Houston’s hottest hoods, Long Point Road is now home to a new public art installation, aptly called “Art on Long Point.” Seven new sculptures by local artists are snazzing up the main thoroughfare (all the way to Hempstead), and will be rotated out for new art every nine months. Spring Branch Management District has also budgeted to launch a mini murals project in 2020, too.

The sculptures have been curated with the help of Redbud Gallery, the Heights masterminds behind the Heights Boulevard Sculpture Project, and whose artists have created an array of fun, colorful pieces to be on the lookout for. There’s an RV-turned-baby buggy by Robbie Barber in Haden Park and a colorful stilt house by Randall Mosman hovering over Long Point and Gessner. Pointing, a metal patchwork dog by Carter Ernst, sits in front of the brand new Braun Enterprises shopping center that—in further proof of impending hotness—is also bringing a Slowpokes Coffee and Shoot the Moon, an anticipated pizzeria/self-serve (yes, self serve) bar from Kevin Floyd (a former partner in Hay Merchant), to the area.

You can also find a map of all the art, along with all the artist’s credentials, at sbmd.org/lprart.

And you can celebrate at the launch of the public art project tomorrow, Feb 14, at 1 p.m. Public officials and bigwigs will attend, but the public is invited as well. Just be careful. It will be Valentine’s Day, and you might find yourself falling in love with a metal patchwork dog. Dangerous, since all these pieces will be available for purchase from the artists after they’re done sitting pretty on Long Point for the next nine months.

Art on Long Point Kick Off, Feb 14 at 1 p.m., 8141 Long Point Road.
