Aladar Deutsch opened his first gift shop in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico in 1929. Last month, his grandson, Lance Deutsch, toasted the family jewelry business’s 90th year—fittingly, the stone anniversary—at Deutsch Houston’s renovated Highland Village showroom.

There, longtime customers and local influencers fêted the milestone, learned about summer jewelry trends, and tried on wedding collections from luxury designers like Cartier, Lauren K, and Kwiat.

Party bites—stuffed mushrooms, bacon-wrapped dates, and bruschetta and burrata—came courtesy of neighboring Eloise Nichols. “The Princess Cut,” a summer sangria cocktail, was the event’s signature drink, and Popfancy Pops offered flavored icy treats dunked in glasses of bubbly.

Deutsch brought the warm fuzzy feelings with a heartfelt speech about his family roots and, later, the announcement that a portion of the party’s jewelry proceeds would benefit Heroes for Children, the local nonprofit that offers financial and social assistance to families of children battling cancer.

Abby Ledoux
Abby Ledoux traded Canada’s border for Mexico’s when she moved to Texas from northwestern Vermont in November 2017 to join the staff at Houstonia. An alumna of Emerson College’s journalism program in Boston, Abby was previously associate editor of three weekly newspapers in her home state of Vermont. There, she covered everything from Bernie Sanders to the heroin epidemic and won numerous state and regional awards for her work, including the Vermont Press Association’s 2014 Rookie of the Year. She was also an investigative reporting fellow at the New England First Amendment Coalition. Today, Abby is excited to explore Houston’s vibrant, diverse culture (and shopping scene). Aside from fashion and design, she’s passionate about politics, hip hop and Mexican food. She believes leopard is a neutral and red lipstick can fix almost anything.
