If there’s one thing to be said about Houstonians, it’s this: We’re not ones to let a little rain get us down. So when torrential flooding in September (remember that?) forced a last-minute cancellation of Legacy Community Health Services’ sold-out 17th-annual cocktail party, it was not game over but game rescheduled.

The new date, December 12, saw more than 375 people pack into the Fertitta family’s magnificent River Oaks mansion, decked out in full holiday regalia including (faux) penguins, polar bears, and even snow.

Paige Fertitta, Sheridan Williams, Elizabeth Petersen, Melissa Mithoff, Hallie Vanderhider, Shannon Hall, Marcus Sloan, Richard Flowers, and Angel Rios chaired the event that honored Tootsies creative director Fady Armanious, and Legacy headliners CEO/executive director Katy Caldwell and COO Chree Boydstun welcomed the festive, well-dressed crowd, who dined on bountiful buffets catered by, of course, Landry’s.

The party, which sold out in minutes, functions as Legacy’s annual fall fundraiser, which transitioned from a luncheon to cocktail affair three years ago. All told, last week’s event raised more than $390,000 for Legacy’s Little Readers program, sponsored by H-E-B, which distributes new, age-appropriate books to kids and their families at each well-child visit. To emphasize the importance of childhood literacy, medical providers give parents a “prescription to read.” The initiative has given away more than 105,000 books to pediatric patients to date from 13 locations in the Greater Houston Area and 17 school campus clinics.

Abby Ledoux traded Canada’s border for Mexico’s when she moved to Texas from northwestern Vermont in November 2017 to join the staff at Houstonia. An alumna of Emerson College’s journalism program in Boston, Abby was previously associate editor of three weekly newspapers in her home state of Vermont. There, she covered everything from Bernie Sanders to the heroin epidemic and won numerous state and regional awards for her work, including the Vermont Press Association’s 2014 Rookie of the Year. She was also an investigative reporting fellow at the New England First Amendment Coalition. Today, Abby is excited to explore Houston’s vibrant, diverse culture (and shopping scene). Aside from fashion and design, she’s passionate about politics, hip hop and Mexican food. She believes leopard is a neutral and red lipstick can fix almost anything.
