Food News: A Former NFL Star Leaves a Big Tip at Thirteen

Celebrities visiting Houston restaurants is nothing new. Most dine, pay, and go on their way without much fanfare, though sometimes we get Shaq and Arnold sightings.

Well, former NFL star Chad Johnson (better known to some as Ochocinco, remember that?) brought the fanfare. He dined Saturday at Thirteen, NBA star (and ex-Rocket) James Harden’s fine-dining restaurant, and though his bill was $107.17, he left a $1,300 tip. The amount is a nod to Harden’s number, which he is now wearing for the Brooklyn Nets (insert vomit emoji), while Johnson also left a note on his receipt that “James Harden is scared to play me in FIFA.”

Harden acknowledged the tip and accepted Johnson’s challenge on Instagram. Soccer brings everyone together.

More rankings! GAYOT, a guide to restaurants and other lifestyle fare, named the best burger restaurants in America to honor National Burger Day (that was Friday). It’s No. 1 choice was Becks Prime on Kirby Drive. Becks, family-owned since 1985 and operating several Houston-area stores and one in Dallas, is known for a variety of burgers grilled over mesquite coals (chances are you have smelled the air around a Becks Prime and got hungry).

Heights Thai restaurant Kin Dee is celebrating a year of service with an anniversary party on June 10. The event starts at 6 p.m. with a ribbon cutting, since the restaurant never officially had a grand-opening party because of the pandemic. Get samples of Thai delights, and entertainment includes live music and dance performances.

Speaking of anniversaries: Molina’s Cantina is celebrating 80 years with a monthlong celebration. Look for giveaways, parties being held throughout the month at the three Molina’s locations, and—possibly—$0.41 crispy tacos (since the restaurant opened in 1941). For more information, visit Molina’s Instagram.

Head to Urban Harvest Farmers Market this Saturday for its annual Tomato Festival. Also, Urban Harvest is bringing back live music on Saturday with Dem Roots. The festival runs from 8 a.m. to noon at the market, 2752 Buffalo Speedway.
