How to Hook a Whale

Toulouse interior 002 k3j6hc

The buzzy new Toulouse is as good a place to start your hunt as any.

In this oil-rich town, meeting the millionaire next door is as simple as getting a drink at the right bar—and that bar is probably in River Oaks, specifically in the brand-new River Oaks District, whether at Toulouse, Steak 48, or the second-floor bar at Le Colonial. On the West Gray side of things, stalwarts Brasserie 19 and Local Pour are still packing them in.

Not a drinker? Drop by the nation’s second-wealthiest zip code—77010—for lunch. Phoenicia’s daytime crowd is lousy with lawyers, while Quattro at the Four Seasons is so popular with Vinson & Elkins attorneys it’s been dubbed the “V&E cafeteria.” Prefer doctors? Join the Junior League of Houston, which requires all first-year members to volunteer at Texas Children’s Hospital.

While you’re joining things, secure a spot on the right Rodeo Houston committee—Breeders Greeters is famously heavy on marriageable men. And if all else fails, appeal to a higher power in a house of worship with a moneyed flock, be it St. Martin Episcopal (where the Bushes are members), St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, or Temple Emanu-El. Remember: If you find a guy here, you could be making a lifetime commitment to skip Sunday Funday (or Friday night on the town), so be careful what you pray for.
