Around 18,000 people filled the Toyota Center last night for President Trump’s rally in support of his former nemesis, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz. Ahead of the event, the president tried to put his old nickname for Cruz, Lyin’ Ted—which Cruz’s Democratic opponent, Rep. Beto O’Rourke, had brought up during the pair’s last debate—to bed. Now, the president says, he’s Beautiful Ted. Texas Ted.

It was apparent that O’Rourke has gotten under the president’s skin. Trump went after the candidate for using his childhood nickname, telling the crowd, “Ted’s opponent in this race is a stone-cold phony named Robert Francis O’Rourke, sometimes referred to as ‘Beto.’ He pretends to be a moderate, but he’s actually a radical, open borders left-winger.”

Trump’s main theme was immigration as he attempted to get Republicans fired up to vote on November 6. Cruz remains ahead in the polls by several points.

The scene at Toyota Center yesterday was a colorful one, as people from Houston and beyond hung out in line, tailgating and bonding over their mutual love of the man they believe is saving the country. Thousands who couldn’t get in watched the show on a big screen outside the arena.

Protesters, too, made their appearance. A giant orange Trump baby grasping a phone was much-shared on Twitter last night.
