Drive-In at Sawyer Yards Is Hitting the Brakes as It Moves to a New Spot

Time to roll up your windows, folks, because one of the Bayou City’s first drive-in movie theaters is hitting its brakes. Rooftop Cinema Club’s Drive-in at Sawyer Yards will show its last movie on November 29.*Sob* But don’t worry movie-lovers, the drive-in theater company is already scouting out a new Houston location to replace it.

“While we’re going to miss the home of our first U.S. drive-in, we’re really excited about the possibilities a new venue can bring,” Gerry Cottle, owner and founder of Rooftop Cinema Club, told Houstonia. “It will be especially welcome as we enter the holiday season and are looking for a fun but socially distant outing over the coming months.”

The Drive-in at Sawyer Yards opened its car doors in May with a screening of Grease, and quickly rolled its way into our hearts, becoming a much-needed source of fun during our pandemic summer vacation.

Even as the Drive-in rolls up its windows for this temporary hiatus, it’s still offering a fantastic final slate of showings that will show the Sawyer Yards location off in style. In addition to old classics and modern favorites, the Drive-in will screen two new 2020 releases, The Secret: Dare to Dream (November 17) and The Broken Hearts Gallery (November 19) and will also celebrate National Princess Day with a showing of Disney’s The Princess and the Frog on November 18 (attendees are encouraged to dress in full royal regalia).

And since it’s officially November, there’s a selection of holiday favorites, ranging from the family friendly Elf to romantic favorite Love Actually and comedy classic National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.

Tickets range from $28 to $35, depending on your choice of view. Rooftop Cinema Club’s Drive-In at Sawyer Yards, 2301 Summer St. More info at rooftopcinemaclub.com.  See the remaining final slate of films below.

During her tenure in the commonwealth, she walked with ghosts through the state's oldest municipal cemetery, became BFFs with one of the writers behind the Despicable Me franchise, and borderline stalked an Elvis Tribute Artist — but in her defense, she won multiple awards for that story, and he was crowned the world's best ETA. Her work has been picked up by The Washington Post, Los Angeles Times and The Associated Press. When Emma's not chasing down a story, taking in a musical, or watching a superhero TV show, she's spending time with her giant, sweet potato fry-stealing cat, Boh (named after Charm City icon Natty Boh), whose raison d'etre is to be a real-life Garfield.
