Native houstonian Linsay Radcliffe grew up riding horses, developing an early love of hats and the elegance (not to mention the sun protection) that a great hat can provide. These days she rarely considers an outfit complete without her Hampui medicine hat. Frustrated by the lack of quality traveling cases—the kind glamorous women would carry in bygone eras to protect their precious and elaborate millinery—Radcliffe (whose background is in business consulting) joined forces with her friend Lindsay McConnon and created Freya, a line of modern, stylish hat boxes for today’s globetrotting style-setters.

Launched just this week from their home base in San Francisco, Freya hat cases are handcrafted in Tuscany of Italian leather, lined with silk, fitted with custom brass hardware and available in a variety of colors and exotic skins. The signature case is the Poppy, a large hard case that can fit four to five hats yet still fit in an overhead compartment or underneath a standard economy seat on a plane. It's designed with interior pockets for sunglasses, jewelry, or any other personal items travelers prefer not to check, along with a media strap for a laptop—heck, there’s even a makeup mirror and a compartment for magazines to read on the plane or wherever your travels take you.

The Poppy case is large enough to fit four or five hats, not to mention other accessories, while the mini Poppy is designed for daily use.

The Mini Poppy is a smaller version that comes in more fun colors and textures, including metallics and embossed snakeskin. Radcliffe touts it as versatile enough for daily use, as well as for the “modern nomad,” as she likes to call seasoned travelers. The Poppy is priced at $990, while the Mini Poppy starts at $590, so it's definitely an investment piece—like other high-end luggage or handbags—not just an accessory.

There is also a line of Freya silk scarves ($55), printed with florals inspired by Middle Eastern carpets—perfect for tying on the handle of your Poppy á la Grace Kelly.
