A Guide to Houston’s Pro Sports Teams and Why Fans Ride So Hard

From the Texans and Astros to the Rockets, Dynamo, and rising leagues like pro volleyball, Houston’s sports scene is deep, loyal, and built for championships.

The Astros are definitely World Series champs and the haters are wrong.

H-Town’s sports scene doesn’t get the recognition it deserves on the national level. But with multiple championships, incredible fans, and several future Hall-of-Fame players still reppin’ the H, it’s time to put some respect on our city’s teams. From traditional leagues like the NFL to up-and-coming ones like the women’s League One Volleyball (LOVB), Houston’s sports scene is as diverse as its people.

Before we start with a guide to each team, let’s get a few things straight for those of you who are new to these parts:

  • Houston, we have a problem” should never be used when talking about our teams.
  • Michael Jordan played in the 1995 NBA playoffs, so there’s no asterisk next to the Rockets’ second title.
  • The cheating scandal does not taint the 2017 Houston Astros World Series title, and no one was wearing a buzzer.
  • Clay Walker’s “Football Time in Houston” is an absolute banger of an anthem.

Alright, now that you’ve had a brief history lesson, it’s time to learn why Houstonians have so much hometown pride.

The big leagues

Houston Texans

NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE (NFL) | Venue: NRG Stadium | season dates: September to January

A generational defense, renewed excitement about the team, and a historic run by head coach DeMeco Ryans are just a few reasons why Houston Texans fans are once again all in on the city’s biggest team. But, before Ryans changed the team’s culture after joining in 2023, things were looking bleak. The squad had only won a combined 11 games from 2022 to 2024, and there was high turnover, with the team rotating between four different head coaches in just two years. The turnaround is officially complete as DeMeco Ryans became just one of a handful of coaches to win a playoff game in his first three years as head coach. It's truly football time in Houston again. If that wasn’t enough, the Texans have also found their next great player in defensive end Will Anderson Jr.

Game Day Pro Tip: Get to NRG Stadium early on game days and walk around one of the best tailgates in the South.

Houston Astros

Major League Baseball (MLB) | Venue: Daikin Park | Season Dates: March to October

Most pro teams would do anything to go on a run like the Astros. They’ve won two out of the five World Series they’ve played in, and, before missing the playoffs in 2025, they had reached the postseason every year since 2017. Simply put, this is the golden era of Astros baseball (we’re still in it!), and it’s led by the greatest Astros ever, José Altuve.

Game Day Pro Tip: Come hungry, because Daikin Park has some of the best food options in the city, and each season they update the list of H-Town staples that are serving up classics to hungry fans.

Houston Rockets

National Basketball Association (NBA) | Venue: Toyota Center | Season dates: October to April

Gone are the championship days of Hakeem Olajuwon and the resurgence led by James Harden. The Houston Rockets are all in on hunting for the next ring with future Hall-of-Famer Kevin Durant and company. After developing Jalen Green during a tough rebuild, the Rockets opted to trade for Kevin Durant to position themselves for a long postseason that could culminate in a championship. Joining KD are talented young players like Alperen Şengün and Amen Thompson, so every home game at Toyota Center is must-watch basketball.

Game Day Pro Tip: You usually don’t get a chance to experience history when going to a sporting event, but I highly recommend fans eat at China Garden before the game. The city’s oldest Chinese restaurant is located across the street from the Toyota Center and is a pregame spot for Houston celebrities.

Houston Dynamo and Dash

Major League Soccer (MLS) and National Women’s Soccer League | Venue: Shell Energy Stadium | Season dates: March to November

One soccer team in Houston would’ve been a huge win, but we have two: the Houston Dynamo (playing in MLS) and the Houston Dash (playing in the NWSL). Houston summers are hot, but there’s something so perfect about being outside, watching a Dynamo or Dash game while the sun sets on the downtown skyline. Expect renewed interest in both teams after the city hosts World Cup games, so get your tickets now! Newbies will get to bear witness to soccer’s extra loud fans. Some of the best in the nation include Bayou City Republic (Dash) and El Batallon Houston (Dynamo).

Game Day Pro Tip: Arrive in EaDo early and hang out at Pitch 25, which is owned by former Houston Dynamo and US Men’s National Team great Brian Ching. If you’re lucky, you could even play a little soccer against him on Pitch 25’s indoor soccer field.

UNDER THE RADAR

LOVB Houston

League One Volleyball (LOVB) | Venue: Various | Season dates: January to April

Women’s collegiate volleyball has been hitting record-high TV ratings as of late, and now, the excitement for the sport is growing even more with professional volleyball. Houston is one of six teams competing in LOVB this year, with three more franchises coming online in 2027. If you’ve never watched a volleyball match, then you’re in for an intense treat. Each point is filled with sky-high drama, capped off with precision striking. And the rallies? Well, no game is ever out of reach when a team gets hot.

Game Day Pro Tip: Check the LOVB Houston schedule because they’re playing at two different venues this year: the Berry Center and the Fort Bend County Epicenter.

Fury Fighting Championships

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) | Venue: Varies | Dates: All Year

Houston has one of the biggest and best mixed martial arts scenes in the nation, so it’s no surprise that UFC’s biggest feeder promotion, Fury Fighting Championships, is based out of H-Town. Heck, Houston even already has a champion: Local fighter Josh Van won the UFC flyweight title in 2025, after fighting for Fury earlier in his career. Since 2010, former fighter Eric Garcia has put on MMA events around the city and has become an official UFC partner through his Fury Fighting Championships brand. There’s nothing like watching MMA in person, and it’s even better when the next generation of UFC stars are fighting right here in the city.

Game Day Pro Tip: Arrive early to get the most out of your ticket, because all the cards feature preliminary fights before the UFC Fight Pass broadcast. A little self-promotion here: I’m the play-by-play voice for Fury FC, so come say hi to me cage-side before our broadcast!
