Here's hoping the three-pound sirloin is still on the menu when La Casa del Caballo reopens.

Each Friday, Gastronaut rounds up the most notable openings and closings of the week.
News came out of Montrose this week that was a little opening, a little closing, a lot happy, and a little sad. La Casa del Caballo, the excellent Mexican steakhouse at 322 Westheimer Rd., announced that it would be closing its doors. Upon opening in February 2013, the restaurant received much critical acclaim for its wood-grilled steaks, done in the style of owner Carlos Abedrop's hometown, Saltillo. Moving into the large, two-story space is El Tiempo 1308 Cantina, which recently lost its own lease on Montrose Blvd.
"The rumor is true," wrote El Tiempo owner Roland Laurenzo in a press release. "La Casa Del Caballo will close on December 31, 2014, and we will take possession on January 1, 2015." Laurenzo intends to remodel the building, which also once housed La Strada and Caffe Bello, and reopen by April 1 next year. Meanwhile, Eric Sandler reports at CultureMap that all isn't lost for La Casa del Caballo—Abedrop plans to reopen his restaurant next spring in a smaller, to-be-announced location.
In closings, the infrequently discussed Katch 22 shut its doors at 700 Durham Dr. this week. The restaurant—owned by Kory Clemons, son of baseball great Roger, and Luke Mandola—opened in May 2013, but never quite hit the homeruns needed to stay in business along the finicky Washington Avenue corridor. Blame the location, perhaps: before it was Katch 22, 700 Durham Dr. was also home to Convivio, Table Seven, and Fuzion 007 in a short, three-year span.
In a press release, the owner of Katch 22 wrote that they're looking for a new spot to open in, just in case location really was the problem. A quick glance at its Yelp reviews indicates that although the spot wasn't necessarily a critical favorite, it was liked by its customers. In the meantime, the restaurant notes that "all of our Katch 22 employees have been offered positions at Cullen’s American Grille and/or Catering by Cullen’s to ensure their financial health during this transition."
