Down House

Down House is named after the famous home of Charles Darwin in Kent. It was there that he developed the theory of evolution, while working in the estate’s elaborate gardens. At the Heights restaurant, an antique poster of the periodic table of the elements serves as artwork, and laboratory bric-a-brac rounds out the science theme. While the café is primarily a coffeehouse and friendly neighborhood bar, it conveniently serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner—and stays open until midnight. There’s a kids’ menu, too. Breakfast features huevos rancheros and whole-grain waffles, while lunch includes a burger, a fish taco, salads, and twice-cooked fries. A short but serious evening menu presents seasonally available local and regionally sourced ingredients.
