Shade was a pioneer in the Heights when it opened in 2004, and it remains a favorite fine-dining destination for those who prefer to avoid the crowds at the trendy restaurant of the week in favor of a low-key vibe, contemporary, clean-lined décor, and well-executed, unpretentious food. Shrimp and crab campechana, chimichurri-marinated leg of lamb, and sautéed snapper in a Thai red curry coconut broth are a few of the most popular preparations, but the menu changes seasonally to take advantage of local ingredients. The wide-ranging wine list offers over 100 choices, about three-quarters from the New World, with only a small fraction of the bottles costing more than $75.
