At Tampico—like neighbor Connie’s—you choose your fish from the ice-filled display cases inside the clean, efficient, neon-trimmed dining room and pay by weight. Our favorite, the whole red snapper a la plancha, comes on a sizzling comal with your choice of french fries or fried rice, and tastes great washed down with a michelada. The super-fresh fish has been pulling in crowds since 1996, and you can have that fish cooked nearly any way you like. There’s more to Tampico than snapper and shrimp, such as enchiladas and fajitas, but it’s the cheap and cheerful seafood platters that are the chain’s biggest draw.
