The new Marriott Marquis Houston wants to be an Astros fan’s dream, and Hall of Famer Craig Biggio is helping them do it.
When the hotel opens this November next to Discovery Green, it will contain a two-story sports bar, appropriately named Biggio’s. Add in Houston’s largest ballroom and a rooftop lazy river shaped like Texas, and you get what the Marriott hopes will be a prime downtown destination for locals and visitors alike. But good luck trying to get a room—though the hotel boasts 1,000 guest rooms, every single one is already booked for next year's Super Bowl.
Biggio isn’t known for putting his name up in lights—other than the lights of the scoreboard, collecting every one of his hits for the famed 3,000 hit club while playing for the Astros—but he said working with the Marriott was a “no-brainer.” At a press conference Thursday, he said the security in working with a name like Marriott helped in the decision.
“Who would ever imagine … that I would ever have a sports bar named after me in a town that would be my future home?” Biggio said. “I’m going to try and spend as much time as I can (at Biggio’s). I want to see it be successful. This is going to be a fun project.”
The bar’s showstopper will be a 30-foot tall screen, showcasing games both when the Astros are away and when they’re playing at Minute Maid Park, just a few blocks away. The hotel hasn’t revealed its menu yet, but it does promise a variety of local craft beers on tap.
“It was … vital that when guests are visiting our great city of Houston, whether for a conference, business meeting or leisure trip, they will have a great sports environment to root for their favorite teams,” Steven Mitzner, director at RITA Development, said in a scripted statement at the press conference.
“To create that sports bar was an easy decision, and when it came time to think of which athlete would best represent Houston, there was only one athlete that came to mind: Craig Biggio.”
The hotel will also feature over 100,000 square feet of meeting space and room and fitness center features for busy business travelers.
