A beacon of sophisticated bites in ever-evolving EaDo, Tout Suite has made a name for itself based on its luscious bakery offerings, such as the salted-caramel-chocolate-peanut tart, green-tea-raspberry sponge cake, and macarons in assorted inventive flavors (crème brûlée, pistachio, tiramisu). Those lured inside by the promise of great desserts have also found Tout Suite offers some very solid breakfast and brunch specials, crowd favorites which include the stick-your-arteries Vietnamese steak and eggs and the Southern Benedict with poached eggs, fried chicken and cornbread.
But this reporter’s incurable suite (ha!) tooth isn’t due to the café’s abundance of offerings on the sugar spectrum or their matutinal fare but rather their addictive savory and (wouldn’t ya know it?) vegetarian dishes.
Case in point, the avocado toast with paper-thin radish slices and chives on thick cuts of white bread is a terrific combination of creamy stone fruit and crisp carbohydrates. Red pepper flakes add just a hint of heat balanced by the unctuous avocado.
I challenge even the most ardent carnivore to dismiss the mushroom toast layered with salty Gournay (often known as the trademarked brand Boursin) cheese and microgreens as “rabbit food” as these hearty slices taste like a 'shroom pizza’s more refined first cousin once removed.
The next best thing since these sliced breads is the pear-and-sprouts sandwich on sourdough. Fontina cheese and whole pecans provide welcome salty dairy depth and nutty crunch, respectively, while chewy sourdough holds it all together. And for those veggies who, um, actually tend to eschew plants almost as much as meat (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE), the three-cheese grilled cheese is soft, buttery and just the comfort food you need after braving the traffic on 59-South.
