Having manned Perfect Party HQ these many years, we know there’s really only one rule to follow when assembling the list: If David Lee Roth is playing at the Houston Grand Opera’s gala (April 14), then he’s guest of honor at our own soirée. It’s really very black and white. He can talk chemistry with another of our invitees, the impressively intelligent Judy Wu, a computational quantum chemist at UH whose research on hydrogen bonds recently earned her a National Science Foundation CAREER award and more than half a mil in funding. He can discuss music with French artist Jean-Michel Jarre, who’s bringing his Electronica World Tour to town (April 10). (Raise your hand if, back in 1986, you were among the million-plus Houstonians who turned out for Jarre’s huge downtown concert/light show.)
But that’s not all! As he makes the rounds at our little gathering, Diamond Dave can chat about art and sports with Opie Otterstad, who’s showing new work commemorating the Astros’ World Series win at Off the Wall Gallery (through April 15); leadership with outgoing Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards, visiting Houston to read from her new memoir, Make Trouble: Standing Up, Speaking Out, and Finding the Courage to Lead—My Life Story (April 8); and, finally, basketball with NBA great Shaquille O’Neal, who’s appearing at An Evening with a Legend, a fundraiser for Texas Children’s Cancer Center (April 9). Unlike Dave, we already feel tardy for this party.
