Dec. 21–23 | Houston Symphony
There are Nutcracker people, and then there are Messiah folks. If the latter is your holiday jush, the Houston Symphony teams up with its resident chorus and a sprinkling of guest soloists to mount Handel's 1741 choral masterwork just in time for Christmas. Can we get a Hallelujah?
Tickets from $29. Jones Hall, 615 Louisiana St. 713-224-7575. More info and tickets at houstonsymphony.org.
Dec. 22–23 | Saint Arnold Brewing Co.
Trade in the sad mall Santa; upgrade to beer Santa. Both Saint Nick and Saint Arnold himself will be posted up in the brewery's beer hall for photo ops. Yeah, the line will probably be pretty long, but that's why there's beer (and root beer for the kids).
Free. Saint Arnold Brewing Co., 2000 Lyons Ave. 713-686-9494. More info at saintarnold.com.
Dec. 22 | Wortham Center
Check the Clear Lake native's exciting riff on classic magic tricks that aim to dazzle crowds who've become accustomed to the extraordinary. We forget how amazing things can be. I want to bring that sense of awe back.”
Tickets from $20. Wortham Center, 501 Texas St. 713-228-6737. More info and tickets at houstonfirsttheaters.com.
Dec. 23 | Axelrad
In last weekend's roundup, we trumpeted an opportunity to see Catherine O'Hara's face projected live over the Houston Symphony as the orchestra accompanied a screening of Home Alone. If, for some reason, y'all missed that engagement, this is your chance to enjoy her voice acting talents in this Tim Burton stop-motion classic, in which Jack Skellington (Danny Elfman!), king of Halloween Town, stumbles across Christmas Town. The film starts at sundown; Axelrad is all-ages until 9 p.m.
Free. Axelrad, 1517 Alabama St. 713-597-8800. More info via Facebook.
