As Valentine’s Day approaches, not all of us are jazzed about the idea of Hunger Games-ing our way to a reservation at one of Houston’s most romantic restaurants. So why not skip the sit-down dinner with your significant other and dozens of other couples, and opt for something a little different this year?

From picnics in the best park spots to a stimulating evening at a burlesque show, here are some ideas for the perfect date in Houston, on Valentine’s Day and beyond.

Meow Wolf wants you to get lost together, enchanted by worlds created by Afsaneh Aayani (pictured) and other magical artists.

Solve the multiversal mysteries of Meow Wolf

Nothing builds relationships like solving a puzzle together. But if you're a little tired of sitting around the kitchen table staring at a 1,000-piece jigsaw, consider the immersive storytelling environs of Meow Wolf's Radio Tave. Here, you can compare notes on what happened to a West Texas radio station plucked into an entirely new dimension while playing with fully interactive art installations, or you can challenge each other to a game of pool. Plus, if you need some nibbles while you compare notes on your theories, there's a well-stocked bar and restaurant tucked inside.

Get lost in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

We were considering what would be the sexiest museum in Houston. Hear us out: It might just be the MFAH. The largest in the city and one of the largest in the country, the museum has so many galleries it’s easy to find an area for a more intimate stroll. Pro tip: Head to the Glassell Collections on the second level of the Caroline Wiess Law Building. The discreet entrance to the gallery is easy to miss, making for less crowded rooms filled with gorgeous African art and gold artifacts from the Americas and Indonesia. Some of the jewelry may give you gift ideas, too.

Enjoy a scenic promenade with your boo at the Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens.

Stroll through the Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens

If MFAH is still too busy for you, head to one of the institution’s satellite sites, like the Bayou Bend Collection. The former home of philanthropist Ima Hogg is a romantic and serene place to spend time with your significant other. Wander the beautiful 14-acre gardens and dip into the Hogg mansion to admire period furniture, home decor, and art—guaranteed to result in fewer arguments than a trip to IKEA.

Stand in awe together as you take in a 100-year-old architectural wonder.

Go deep into the Buffalo Bayou Cistern

This sprawling, cavernous space is perfect for a moody date. Come here for the 45-minute sound healing meditation sessions held on weekends and Wednesdays. If you want to get your nerd on, book a history tour Wednesday through Sunday. The Cistern is also home to rotating art installations and musical performances.

Do the brew at Saint Arnold

Instead of just going out for a pint, why not make a day of it and learn how the pint was made in the first place? Houston's beloved beer brewers at Saint Arnold Brewing Company offer tours of their facilities, as well as an open space for playing board games, eating, and obviously imbibing. If you're OK with hobnobbing with other couples, they also host a date night event every Tuesday. Here, you can take part in activities designed specifically to get to know each other even better.

Cap off a day at Post with an evening drinking and dancing among the galleries at Art Club.

Have a DIY date at Post

With food, drinks, and entertainment both indoors and out, this former Downtown post office lets you customize the perfect date night. Place your bets on gachapon machines full of small toys, take a free yoga class, listen to live music, go shopping for unique jewelry, watch a movie, and cap it all off with dancing, drinks, and exploring installation galleries at Art Club.

Learn where your food comes from in the culinary garden, one of the many flora features at Houston Botanic Garden.

Take a nature walk at the Houston Botanic Garden

Admire the grounds’ many varieties of plant life, including a coastal prairie garden flush with native species like Indian blankets and Louisiana irises. Even if you can't take them home, the memories of these flowers will last longer than a dozen red roses. There's also a picnic grove with a few tables and great shade courtesy of large oaks, accessible with or without admission to the HBG.

A picnic at Hermann Park is a great way to spend Valentine's Day.

Enjoy a picnic in a park

We’re not reinventing the wheel here. Check the weather forecast, pack some snacks, and head to your favorite park for a romantic picnic. But where to? We love the hill adjacent to Miller Outdoor Theatre at Hermann Park and the cozy lawn areas in the Eastern Glades portion of Memorial Park. If you’re into something flashier—or perhaps you’re planning to propose—opt for any spot in Buffalo Bayou Park with stellar Downtown views. Of course, there’s always the classic Menil Collection lawn.

The Turrell Skyspace is moody and romantic at night.

Take selfies at the Twilight Epiphany Skyspace

This date can happen either during the day or at night—even better, make it a sunset event. When the sun is up, walk around Rice University’s beautiful campus and pop into the Moody Center for the Arts, then spend some time at the famous Skyspace. Come nightfall, an LED light sequence projects onto the structure’s ceiling, a dreamy backdrop for your couple's selfies.

Enjoy movies with a view at Moonstruck Drive-In, and cuddle in the privacy of your own car.

Cozy up at Moonstruck Drive-In

Switch up movie night from the big, chain theater to a retro drive-in. Head to Moonstruck, an outdoor movie experience in a big field in the East River development, and bring cozy blankets, pillows, and snacks to snuggle up and watch a movie from the comfort of your car.

Get cultured at a gallery opening

Free wine, cheese, and entertainment: all the ingredients for an excellent date that won't require taking out a second mortgage. Gallery openings are a win-win for everyone involved, since you have something to do together and the local arts scene gets some much-deserved love. Plus, with the money you save, you may even be able to pick up a piece or two as a gift for your sweetie.

Stargaze at George Observatory

Instead of taking in a starry sky at the outdoor movie theater, you could also drive out to the countryside to view your favorite planets and constellations from the domed telescopes at the George Observatory. This attraction also features the famed 36-inch Gueymard Research Telescope, one of the largest in the United States. If you really like your date, you can do both ideas—probably not on the same night, though.

Get in the mood at a burlesque show

Don’t know if you’ve heard, but Houston’s burlesque scene is not only back postpandemic—it’s better. This recommendation is for those who want to bring a little spice to a date, whether it’s to rekindle a flame or light one up. AvantGarden in Montrose hosts burlesque shows every Friday, often featuring legendary local performers like Abby Cadabra, Valentina J’Adore, and Cara Cherie.

Off the Record is a "listening lounge" in Downtown decorated with a vinyl shop theme.

Go dancing at Off the Record

Visit a clubby cocktail bar on Downtown's Main Street that’s a groovy time. Masquerading as a vinyl shop from the outside, Off the Record bills itself as a “listening lounge” with themed nights and DJs that span genres from Motown to ’90s hip-hop. You can dance with your boo, or sit in a corner and vibe to the music together if that’s more your speed.
