Happy Hour: Burgers and Beers at BRC

BRC satisfies both food and beer lovers with their Monday happy hour.

Monday nights, when many restaurants are dark, BRC Gastropub hosts a happy hour of epic proportions. Starting at 2 p.m., all of their draft pints or imperial pints are $3. And with 28 beers on tap, there is no shortage of new things to try. There is even a taster flight of four beers for $5. (Pro tip: fill your growler on Monday, too. That's a $12 growler fill; you certainly won't find a better deal in town. They will fill both BRC and outside growlers.) Happy hour sometimes transitions into an evening special—check the website for specifics on any give Monday.

The oozy, tasty, cooked-to-order Pub Burger at BRC Gastropub

On a recent visit, I stuck with some of my old favorites from their extensive beer menu. It had been quite some time since I indulged in Victory's Golden Monkey, a Belgian-style Tripel that is available all year round; my first taste was reminiscent of bubblegum and spices—just perfect. The 9.5 percent alcohol is so well hidden it's dangerous. Be careful drinking these all night. To wash down my burger, I wanted something darker and with more complementary flavors, so I chose Oskar Blues' Old Chub. The slightly smoky flavor, creamy mouthfeel, and rich, roasty finish of this Scottish Strong ale was the perfect match for the caramelized bacon and spicy sauce and jalapeños on my burger.

The BRC Pub Burger is on special on Mondays for $8, and the massive, messy burger can be customized to your liking. The standard burger comes with sweet but smoky maple bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, and a secret sauce that reminds me of a spicy mayonnaise and thousand island dressing mash-up. I opted to add on freshly sliced jalapeños for an extra kick. While the burger was a hand- and mouthful, the meat was tender and juicy (I order mine rare, always), the bun was soft and fresh, and you certainly can't go wrong with that sweet and salty bacon. This burger might not have made Robb Walsh's Top Burger List of 2013, but it sure is a great deal on Mondays.

If you can't get your fill of BRC, keep your eye out for some of the new concepts coming from the folks behind BRC and Liberty Kitchen Oyster Bar in the Heights. They plan to open three new restaurants in Houston, including Liberty Kitchen and Oysterette on San Felipe in the Galleria area, like the original with a twist. In the Garden Oaks area, at 34th and Ella, will be Cowboy Surfers, a casual dining destination with a live music focus that features the five food groups, according to Owner Lee Ellis: tacos, burgers, pizza, fried chicken, and vodka (and beer). The one I am most excited for is Lee’s Fried Chicken & Donuts, located in a little shack behind Liberty Kitchen in the Heights that will serve—you guessed it—fried chicken and donuts. Finally, they're branching out of Houston to open a Liberty Kitchen Oyster Bar in Austin, which will be a mix of BRC and Liberty Kitchen and have more craft beer. They've even hired architect Michael Hsu, the man behind the Uchi design.
