Mexican Hamburger at Taconmadre

A hefty burger with a Mexican twist.

Feeling famished, I stopped at Taqueria Taconmadre on Edgebrook and decided the hamburguesa perrona sounded like a winner. I ordered the combo—it came with my choice of a drink and skinny, McDonald-esque fries. The agua de jamaica (Hibiscus tea) was refreshing, not overly sweet. “Jamaica,” pronounced ‘ha-mike-ah,’ refers to the dried hibiscus (called flor de Jamaica in Spanish) used to make the delightfully tart tea. It’s a great summer drink, and the bright red color makes it a perfect alternative to Kool-Aid for the kiddos!

Mexican hamburgers usually contain all of the usual American fixings—mustard, mayonnaise, pickles, onions, tomatoes, and even ketchup, with the added appeal of chile peppers, deli-sliced ham or Mexican chorizo, and avocado. Mexican hamburgers are extra endearing because of their messy, home-style appearance. 

Taconmadre's hamburguesa perrona was delicious. The bottom bun was grilled and spread with a mustard followed by a thick layer of American cheese blended with chorizo. The thick ground beef patty was sandwiched between two slices of grilled ham and balanced on the cheese. The toppings included lettuce, tomato, avocado, and pickles. The top bun had a dollop of mayo—all in all, a miraculous fast food fusion burger.

A free cup of charro beans and grilled onions are served upon request. I recommend the beans. I’m usually unimpressed by the charro beans at restaurants, considering my mom can beast some frijoles charros on any given Saturday, but these were awesome.

Now, you might be curious as to what the word “perrona” means. I am familiar with the term; my boyfriend uses it here and there in joking terms. No, it doesn’t refer in any way to dogs. It is a slang term for something cool, awesome, or “bad-ass.”
