First Look: Curry Bistro

A new Indian restaurant arrives in Westchase.

Chicken saag

At first glance, Curry Bistro's menu looked pretty similar to the menu of the Indian restaurant that used to occupy the same space on Westheimer Rd. There were all the usual Punjabi suspects—tandoori, saag paneer, chicken tikka masala, etc.

 But wait a minute—chicken saag?

I don't think I've ever seen that dish before. What a great idea. I love the spicy, buttery greens called saag, and I don't have anything against the stiff white cheese called paneer; it's just that it doesn't taste like much of anything.

Combining the delicious creamy spinach with boneless, skinless chicken instead of the bland cheese is an inspired idea. I was so intrigued that I ordered a bowl, even though my wife and I had already started on the restaurant's $10 lunch buffet. The dish that was delivered to our table was spectacular. The greens were velvety, and the chicken was moist and tender inside. It was so rich, we couldn't make much of a dent in the large bowl. We took most of it home.

I have since been informed that India Restaurant on Richmond has been serving chicken saag for a long time. Oddly. I have never eaten at India's. The popularity of the Richmond strip had come and gone before I moved to town, and I never really became acquainted with the area.

I wonder how many other Indian restaurants offer my new favorite dish.
