Cheap Dates

Happy Hour of the Week: Weights + Measures

An impressive selection of dirt-cheap draft beers is only the beginning at this Midtown hot spot.

"I'm sorry, no. We don't serve Bud Light. Okay, have a nice day!" It was the voice of the Weights + Measures hostess finishing a quick phone call this afternoon, important to note when discussing the weekday happy hour at the new-ish Midtown space that's part bakery, part restaurant, part bar, part coffee shop and home to the only decent parking lot within a 20-block radius. It's important to note that Weights + Measures doesn't serve Bud Light because part of the allure of its happy hour menu are its $6 draft beers, and those beers are so, so much better than watery adjunct lagers.

Right now, the bar inside Weights + Measures—which has its own name, Love & Squalor, as well as its own distinctly different 1970s vibe, which sets it apart from the mid-century modern feel of the rest of the dining room—has a bevy of fine beers on draft, all of which pour for a measly $3.50 during happy hour (Monday through Friday, 4 to 6:30 p.m.). We're talking about Viven Imperial IPA from Brouwerij Van Viven in Sijsele, Belgium, a beer which holds a 98 out of 100 score on; an exceptionally refreshing EKU Pils from Kulmbacher Brauerei in Kulmbach, Germany; and even a tart, Spanish-style cider from Virtue Farms in Fennville, Michigan for those non-beer-quaffers.

Also half-off during happy hour: the daily punch which, today, was an elegant and summery gin-based cocktail with pineapple juice, orange juice and perky Peychaud's bitters. You'll also find Love & Squalor's cocktail of the day for only $6. I recommend watching Weights + Measure's frequently updated Instagram account to see what cocktail will be on deck; yesterday it was a Brown Derby with Old Grand-Dad Bourbon, grapefruit juice and honey syrup. The day before it was a Bellissimo, a stout blend of Carpano Antica, Fino Sherry, Fernet, Maraschino and a dash of Angostura bitters.

Happy hour at the Love & Squalor bar runs from 4 to 6:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Unfortunately, Love & Squalor doesn't offer happy hour pricing on bar bites (hint, hint), and the first 60 minutes of happy hour overlap a quiet period between lunch and dinner when the kitchen is off-duty. My recommendation: Wait until dinner service starts up at 5 p.m., grab a few spots at the bar with your buddies and split one of Weights + Measures' pizzas, which are quickly gaining notice as among the best in town. A $13 pizza will feed three to four people, especially if you add a side of onion rings (ahem, "sesame haystack onions + harissa ketchup") for $9. Split the cost and you're looking at a happy hour set-up that may even carry you through dinner—after which you may as well stay put and order Weights + Measures's lavender olive oil semolina cake with crème fraîche, candied lemon and local honey comb. Because what Weights + Measures may lack in certain happy hour accoutrements, it more than makes up for in sheer variety.
