Modern Shapes In the Heights
this 2018 home in the Heights is used to getting second looks. After all, its street-facing façade is among the most unexpected and unique that we’ve ever seen, made up of two exaggerated shapes, a square and a sloping triangular shed roof, connected together by an inset glass door.
That unique form, however, isn’t just for show. It gives way to a very functional layout, with the indoor spaces deftly wrapping around a central courtyard. There’s also a second outdoor room at the front, as the square portion of the façade forms a protected porch, with cut-outs for a door, window, and skylight.
Inside the entry, the formal living and dining areas are placed together in a great room with soaring ceilings, and either end wall is composed of dramatic floor-to-ceiling glass. This allows for so much natural light to flood through, while the rear wall looks into the central courtyard, which can be accessed by a glass door, so entertaining flows easily from inside to out. Bonus: all the tall ceilings throughout provide a good amount of wall space to display some seriously large-scale art.
Through a wide doorway off the great room, find the custom kitchen. It has access to the garage at the front, and is kitted out with streamlined cabinetry, a large central island, and a comfortable breakfast bar that seats six. Adjacent to there is a cozy den, with large windows overlooking the courtyard, one wall anchored by shelving, and plenty of space for a WFH set-up.
There’s a powder bath for guests—a jewel box steeped in rich, dark finishes and illuminated by a backlit mirror—as well as two more bedrooms and baths to fill out the single level plan. The primary suite is even placed in its own cube with another massive glass wall to capture serene views into the courtyard from the bed.
