Property Watch: The Iconic “Darth Vader House” Hits the Market Again

The force is strong with this one.

If you’ve lived in Houston for any length of time, you’re probably familiar with this house. Nicknamed the “Darth Vader House” for its striking resemblance to the Star Wars villain’s helmet, it was built in 1992 on a large corner lot in West University, making it ripe for photo ops from sidewalk passersby, or cars waiting at the light.

When the original owner put it on the market last year, it garnered international press, as not just locals but seemingly everyone was curious to see inside for the first time. Since it’s re-listed, we thought we’d take a tour.

According to the architect, the exterior of the home was not in fact inspired by Darth Vader, but rather an F-111 stealth fighter jet. Thus the front has something of a snout feel, thanks to a sloping metal roof and articulated stucco facade, with two angular cut-outs on the surrounding stone wall to grant entry.

Surprisingly, the inside is much lighter and brighter to many commentators than expected. The centrally-located sunken living room has double-height ceilings, a wall of windows overlooking the backyard, and integrated strips of blue LED lighting to highlight the room’s unique shape.

Nearby, there's a formal dining room, a second lounge area, the kitchen, and a home office tucked behind sliding glass doors. That office, sometimes cheekily called a lair, was positioned to have 360-degree views of the property. The primary bedroom is also on the main floor, with extra-tall ceilings and a plethora of windows into the backyard.

Up not one but two side-by-side floating staircases, the second-floor lounge overlooks the main rooms below and the backyard. Each of the three bedrooms also benefits from high ceilings and even more windows.

The recent owners kept many of the home’s distinctive finishes – things like the irregular black stonework inlaid into the concrete floor, and the chiseled stone counters in the kitchen and primary bathroom, but they did make an excellent addition: a backyard pool and spa. And those aren’t just any old shape, but rather mimic the angles of the front façade, ensuring the spirit of the original architecture endures.
