Breast cancer is the second most diagnosed cancer in the nation, and the fight toward a cure continues. The Texas Department of Health estimated nearly 20,000 diagnoses in 2022 in the Lone Star State alone. In 1985, the American Cancer Society constructed a week-long event that paved the way for the whole month of October to be designated Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Seven years later, the cosmetic company Estée Lauder cemented the pink ribbon as a national campaign symbol for breast cancer awareness.
All October long, pull out your pink garments and your funds to give back to local organizations working to support the treatment and recovery of women and men who have been diagnosed. Here are a few ways you can support survivors and get informed this month:
All month | Various participating businesses
As an extension of its year-long work raising awareness, Houston’s leading nonprofit breast health organization, The Rose, has partnered with 20 local businesses as part of its October programming. Buy a brownie at Chick-fil-A, have dinner at Etoile, or a cocktail at Kin Dee to support the organization all month. The Rose also partnered with Timeless Vodka, Kendra Scott, Build-A-Bra, Little Woodrows and more for special pink promotions.
