Houstonia Expands, Hires Top Local Talent

Publisher, associate publisher join the ranks of city’s top-selling magazine.

January 31, 2014

HOUSTON – (Jan. 31, 2014) – Today, SagaCity Media President Nicole Vogel announced a significant expansion of the managerial team at Houstonia magazine, the highest-selling monthly publication in America’s fourth largest city. Diane Caplan, formerly the eCommerce and marketing director for Houston’s Momentum Motors, has been named publisher of the magazine. In addition, P’nina Topham, most recently the director of marketing and strategic events at the Houston Chronicle, will become Houstonia’s associate publisher.

“Our magazine’s success during its first year—in terms of readers, advertising dollars and overall market penetration—has been truly incredible,” says Vogel of Houstonia, which launched in April of 2013. “As we enter our second, the challenge has been to find exemplary talent to help us build on that success, and I can’t think of two women more exemplary than Diane and P’nina.”

Caplan says, “I have had my dealerships advertising in the magazine since its debut and have been impressed by it on every level. Also getting to know Nicole over this past year and some of her staff, I saw why I loved the magazine so much. It’s produced by a bunch of really smart, fun people, and so when I was offered me the job, I jumped at it. I know Nicole has been looking long and hard for a publisher who could take Houstonia to the next level, and I feel honored that she chose me for the role.”

For her part Topham says, “Houstonia first wowed me at the checkout counter with its debut issue, 250 Reasons to Love Houston…I immediately thought, ‘this is a magazine that Houstonians need to read.’ With each subsequent issue, my infatuation has grown, as has my passion for my adopted hometown. The magazine teaches me something – something fascinating – every month. The imagery is unmatched, and the topics so varied that Houstonia truly represents our city’s diversity – it represents me – it represents Houston. I’m so proud to be joining the innovative team behind my editorial crush.”

The pair will join a magazine which, in less than a year, has captured the imagination of the city, garnering praise both locally and nationally. Its content has been featured on KHOU’s Great Day Houston, News This Morning, and other local television programs, most notably KIAH’s Newsfix, whose regular feature “The Inside Story” showcases a different Houstonia article each week. On radio, the magazine’s editors are a regular presence on KUHF’s Houston Matters, and Houstonia content has been featured on KRBE’s The Roula and Ryan Show, Mix 96.5, Yahoo! Sports Radio, and several other programs.

Houstonia is also the city’s top-selling magazine, available at over 700 grocery stores, newsstands and other retail outlets, including H-E-B, Central Market, Kroger, Randalls, Whole Foods Market, Wal-Mart, and Barnes and Noble stores. The brainchild of two native Houstonians, and with a staff packed with top local talent, Houstonia aims to become an indispensable publication for the 6 million residents of the Greater Houston area.
