An American Christmas Classic Told With A Twist

A.D. Players at The George Theater presents It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play.

Presented by A.D. Players November 2, 2018

Christy Watkins and Joel Sandel star as George and Mary Bailey In It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play.

Christmas is a time of tradition. Inevitably it stirs within each of us a sense of nostalgia as we remember Christmas’s past, memories of opening presents, time with family, food and friends. In so many instances it sends us back to simpler times, at least as we remember them. Movies like A Christmas Story and It’s A Wonderful Life have become part of those traditions for many. And while the 1940’s were not easy, they do seem to harken back a sense of simplicity. A.D. Players at The George is taking that a step further with It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play as their holiday offering this season.

Radio in the 1940’s was an art form. Stories told over the airwaves by talented actors changing their voices to portray multiple characters, sound effects created live in the moment, catchy jingles in the commercial breaks and all with the family piled around the living room staring at that magic music box. It’s A Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play delightfully brings that genre to life with humor and charm. The play takes place on Christmas Eve in the mid 1940’s and the action is played out over the airwaves, in front of a live audience! The familiar story takes on new depth with this fun twist.

Frank Capra’s original classic was adapted by Joe Landry and first produced in 1996 at the Stamford Center For The Arts. Audiences loved it, reviewers declared it “a must see!” and “the best holiday choice around!” When asked why this selection for the 52nd Season at A.D. Players, Interim Artistic Director Kevin Dean said “I have always loved the movie It’s A Wonderful Life, but it is incredibly difficult to do the film justice on stage as a direct adaption. This script brings the heart of the movie to life, the characters that you have come to love over the years, the famous lines, but it does so in a new way that at times elevates the story even more. We have an amazing group of actors in our cast and I know Houston audiences are going to love it!”

The show opens November 30, the week after Thanksgiving with Preview performances on November 28 & 29 and runs through December 23. Tickets can be purchased online at adplayers.org or by calling the Box Office at 713.526-2721.
