Spread Oaks Ranch is a pristine, historic working ranch that offers personalized, exclusive services for discriminating guests who select from their offerings of corporate retreats, private gatherings, culinary adventures, experiential workshops, or other indoor/outdoor adventures. The main lodge is nestled in a setting of ancient live oaks mottes, coastal prairie, and river-bottom wetlands that covers 5,500 acres along a five-mile stretch of the Colorado River northwest of Bay City, Texas.
Enjoy the epitome of true Texas hospitality as you sip cocktails on the shaded porch or at the well-provisioned bar, or perhaps arrange for a wine tasting in the lodge’s elegant wine cellar. Menus can be tailored to your wishes, as the chefs’ repertoire includes a wide array of cuisines to tempt your palate –from down-home Texas barbecue, oyster roasts, and fresh fish fries, to elegant venison backstrap, duck, or seafood.
Culinary abundance sourced from the ranch’s own bounty
Spread Oaks Ranch serves its own house-cured heritage hams and house-made sausages, as well as ranch-made pickles and other house-canned produce, such as carrots, okra, and peppers. Produce is grown in their greenhouse and shade house. Their chef lards the pantry with jellies and jams made from the ranch’s wild fruit, including dewberries, elderberries, and mustang grapes. Spread Oaks Ranch serves ranch-raised proteins, including Katahdin lamb, certified Angus beef, and organically raised chickens and ducks for eggs and meat. The cuisine is simply unforgettable.
Historical Texas roots
Immerse yourself in a rich history! At times, it’s almost as if you can sense the presence of the original ranch inhabitants – the Karankawa Indians – followed by the earliest European adventurers. In the 1820s, the first two Anglo owners of land that now comprises Spread Oaks Ranch were part of Stephen F. Austin’s “Old Three Hundred,” the settlers enticed by the Mexican government to settle the wilds of its northern province of Texas.
Developing the ideal habitat
Spread Oaks Ranch habitat is managed for migratory birds, whitetail deer, and throngs of other game and nongame wildlife, including bald eagles, alligators, wild hogs, coyotes, myriad species of songbirds, and even an occasional bobcat. The ranch staff manages its land to provide a recipe of quality wild foodstuffs, habitat, and sufficient resting areas these wild creatures need to thrive. Nature is at your doorstep – you only need to step outside for a wildlife spectacle.
Create incomparable hunting memories
Situated within the apex of the Texas mid-coast Central Flyway, renowned for its concentration of wintering waterfowl, the ranch operates as a premier waterfowling destination lodge during the fall and winter. Bring a camera or a shotgun– or both – and experience the plethora of migratory waterfowl that utilize our carefully managed wetlands throughout fall and winter.
Spread Oaks Ranch offers a premium hunting experience for other game, as well, including whitetail deer, upland preserve birds, hogs, and alligators. You even can schedule a thrilling helicopter hog hunt. The ranch’s attentive guides will attend to your every need from the moment you depart the lodge for your hunt until your return—including field-dressing and arrangements for processing or taxidermy. The mission at Spread Oaks Ranch is to provide guests a world-class hunting experience paired with a luxurious lodge and exemplary cuisine.
Fishing and clay target shooting
Freshwater fishing opportunities abound in the managed bass lake behind the lodge and along the five-mile Colorado River frontage. In addition, Spread Oaks Ranch has an in-house coastal guide service for saltwater fishing adventures in nearby Matagorda Bay. A clay target field adjacent to the lodge allows guests to hone their shooting skills, and an oversized firepit overlooking the lake provides the ultimate setting for an evening’s wind-down.
Accommodations for up to 24 guests
Ranch accommodations are set up as a “complete bookout,” which means that one party at a time has exclusive use of the lodging. Amenities allow for up to 24 guests in a variety of luxury suites, casitas, and bunks. Accommodations include 12 private bed/bath (seven king, five double-queen; sleeps 24 if double occupancy), plus bunk room with six beds.
