Regis Gives Back 400+ Service Hours to Houston Area Charities
On Saturday, September 18, The Regis School of the Sacred Heart kicked off the school’s 30th Anniversary year with a Community Service Day, serving multiple charities across the greater Houston area and giving back over 400 hours of service in just one day. More than 230 of the school’s students, faculty, staff, alumni and alumni families participated in projects ranging from decorating pillowcases and organizing care packages for patients at Texas Children’s Hospital to sorting food for distribution at the Houston Food Bank. The Regis community also served at Blackwood Educational Land Institute in Hempstead, TX, Hermann Park Conservancy and Kids’ Meals Houston, Inc.
Service has played a large role in Regis’ education model since the school’s founding in 1991. As a member of the Network of Sacred Heart Schools, Regis educates students according to the Five Goals of Sacred Heart Education: faith, intellect, service, community and maturity. A favorite amongst Regis students past and present is Goal III: a social awareness that impels to action. So, when it came to deciding how to begin celebrating the school’s 30th Anniversary year, the answer was simple—service.
Service or social awareness is incorporated into daily life at Regis, whether it be in the form of an off-campus social awareness project, an on-campus drive or simply being helpful around the classroom and hallways to both teachers and fellow students. Starting with the youngest Regis Knights in 3 Pre-K, students participate in service drives and activities throughout the school year, supporting various charities such as the Houston SPCA, Camp Hope, East Spring Branch Food Pantry and more. Once a year, students conduct a school-wide coin drive to support Sacred Heart sister schools in Uganda. In November and March, Regis third through eighth grade students go out into the greater Houston community over the course of two days to serve at local charities such as The Beacon and Community Family Centers. Instilling a passion for service in students throughout their time at Regis promotes informed active citizenship and civic responsibility on the local, national and global level.
Both in the classroom and out in the community, Regis educators work to develop a lifelong commitment to service in each and every student. Through these hands-on and ongoing social awareness experiences, Regis students develop a foundation of moral character that serves them, and allows them to serve others, for a lifetime.
Regis is an Independent Catholic school and Houston’s only all-boys 3 Pre-K through eighth grade school. Through a unique mix of challenging academics and the values of the Sacred Heart, Regis empowers boys of all faiths to become lifelong scholars and authentic, compassionate leaders.
