The Houston Yacht Club Celebrates 125th Opening Day Weekend

Opening Day Weekend is more tradition than anything else and HYC knows a thing or two about tradition and history. The grand, three-story, pink building is decked in over a century of achievements, history, and trophies. Celebrating 125 years in service, HYC is a casual, recreational hub for those looking for a community of friendship, family activities, sailing and power boating. But you don’t have to own a boat to be a member of the long-standing club, as HYC provides a resort-style atmosphere for socializing, family fun and dining.

Located right on the bay and tucked in the back of a quiet community just 30 minutes from downtown, HYC offers a luxurious pool, spacious dining with spectacular views of the water and harbor, two bars, and sprawling grounds. The club often hosts weddings, receptions and birthdays in the ballroom, and the calendar is packed with events like trivia nights, summer camps, whiskey tastings and game days.
A sailor’s paradise right on the bay. Sails up in under 10 minutes!
While sailing is not a requirement for membership, The Houston Yacht Club is a nationally recognized home for top level racing. There are 28 regattas scheduled in 2022 alone, with some of the biggest yet to come.
HYC will host the Beacon A-Class World Championship at the end of April this year. Sailors representing 9 countries will compete to be crowned the World Champion. Club members will be in attendance with views from the club, the grounds, and many will board spectator boats to watch as the race participants ‘foil’ above the water.

Summer Sailing Camps for Kids and Teens
HYC offers competitive and comprehensive sailing lessons for both adults and youth. These classes are offered on weekends and after-school on Wednesdays, for those with beginner to advanced skillsets. Summer sailing camps are taking enrollments now for 6 youth camps offered June through August and HYC is offering an Adventure Camp as well.

With a long tradition of supporting women’s sailing, HYC was one of the first yacht clubs in the country to offer a residential women’s sailing camp. The Women’s Sailing Association (WSA) offers learn-to-crew clinics, happy hour sails, and in October, The Mermaid Regatta.

It’s not only sailors who call The Houston Yacht Club home; power boaters love the quick access to open water and fun environment of the club as well. HYC offers power boaters their own calendar of events from crawfish boils, cruises to Allen’s Landing and Moody Gardens and restaurant ‘hopping’ along the bay. The Houston Yacht Club harbor also offers two boat ramps, ethanol-free fuel, and a friendly Harbor Master on hand.

Membership comes with perks. Chartering sailboats, kayaks and paddleboards, crewing on sailboats for regattas, lounging by the pool with food and beverages, and attending events from wine tastings and lawn games to Fourth of July festivities and holiday Galas are just a few. The club offers tours and membership information upon request weekdays, evenings, and weekends.
If it’s fun and spectacular waterfront views you are after, The Houston Yacht Club just might be your answer.
