Swap the city for sand at the sea’s very edge. Sea Rim State Park is the well-named stretch of 5 miles of natural coastline rimming the Gulf of Mexico. Visit Port Arthur and share the shoreline with birds, or your family. Collect shells, go fish, and stroll platforms and boardwalks to spot gators, otter and birds who call Sea Rim home. The gulf side is a flurry of motion while the Marsh Unit is a quiet oasis with and overnight cabin and three paddle trails. McFaddin Beach is just next door, offering over 20 miles of hard-packed pristine coastline, piers, and myriad wildlife opportunities.
From Pleasure Island’s lighted piers, levees, and launches, cast into Sabine Lake which is full of redfish, flounder and trout. Or hop aboard a beautiful sailboat for an evening on the water. We call Port Arthur the Cajun Capital of Texas. Our crawfish is spicy, and we peel it by the pound on patios where live Cajun or Zydeco music inspires a little two-step on the dance floor. Explore the Museum of the Gulf Coast’s installations featuring everything from Janis Joplin, Robert Rauschenberg and Jimmy Johnson to Native American lore, dinosaurs, and our maritime history.
Enjoy area craft brew or pop into Port Arthur’s newest downtown tasting room, Clifford Distilling, for a tour and top-shelf whiskey, bourbon, and rum.
