High on a mesa in the South Plains, the city of Lubbock, Texas, is scoring big attention from those who make lists: Top 3 cities for new grads, and 20 fastest growing citise in the U.S., and best cities for remote workers. By 2050, the city is expected to double its population. So, what’s going on out west?

“Lubbock has seen exponential growth take place over the past decade,” John Osborne, president and CEO of the Lubbock Economic Development Alliance, said. “With high-paying jobs, a 15-minute commute anywhere in the city and big-city amenities, Lubbock is the place to be.

Unlike many places in the state and across the country, the American Dream of home ownership is attainable in Lubbock. According to Kim Flenniken of Kim & Company Realtors, the average home price is $255,000 with the average price per foot for existing homes being $115.

“Lubbock provides all that is attractive to someone dreaming of home ownership,” Flenniken said. “Lubbock is one of the very best, most vibrant cities in which to live. Our ease of lifestyle is unsurpassed and quality home affordability in lovely neighborhoods is stronger than ever. You’ll find established and charming neighborhoods to newly developed communities with popular amenities, such as neighborhood meeting rooms, gyms and pools.”

In a city of a quarter of a million in population, the median age is 31, a demographic looking to set down roots. Youthful energy drives a lively variety of entertainment, dining and retail. The universities and colleges bring more than 50,000 students to Lubbock each year. Most national retail and dining chains have a presence in town, but local businesses give the city its unique vibe.

Locals also experience a city with sidewalks, bike lanes and dog parks. The city averages 264 sunny days a year and enjoys less humidity than most of Texas. With efficient infrastructure that allows for a 15 minute-commute across the city, there is more time to enjoy the parks, playgrounds and lakes, like Buffalo Springs Lake and Dunbar Historical Lake for water recreation.

For the adventurous at heart and those eager to spend time outdoors, Caprock Canyons State Park and Trailway has 90 miles of trails, with some that allow horses. Visitors can hike with bison and set up campsites less than two hours outside of Lubbock. A weekend getaway with the family or an ideal day trip with friends, the canyon offers beautiful views and a plethora of options for activities. The city has also attracted a world-class club, Red Feather Golf and Social Club, which opens this summer. It will offer limited membership for its golf course, pickleball courts, swimming pool, spa and restaurant.

Spring festivities in Lubbock include the Lubbock Arts Festival and the Texas Wine, Hops and Shops Wine and Beer Festival. Come summer, it’s time for the Blue Light Live Street Party and Wine and Clay Festival Fest. Fall brings football at Texas Tech University, navigating local farm corn mazes and the National Cowboy Symposium and Celebration. It is also home to Ballet Lubbock, a pre-professional dance school, the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra and a diverse selection of art studios and galleries. Locals and visitors alike can experience the robust culture each first Friday of the month at the First Friday Art Trail located downtown.

With a rich history on display for all to enjoy, local museums include the Science Spectrum and Omni Theater, American Windmill Museum and National Ranching Heritage Center. Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts and Sciences, named for the hometown legend and rock ’n roll icon, Buddy Holly, brings in comedians, musicians and Broadway productions, among other national headlining shows.
