Abbeville’s Giant Omelette Celebration

Tucked into the Gulf Coast of southwestern Louisiana is a parish with the highest concentration of residents (per capita) claiming Acadian ancestry. Vermilion Parish--also known as “The Most Cajun Place on Earth!”--loves to celebrate our heritage and culture with friends from all around the world. The communities of Delcambre, Erath, Abbeville, Kaplan and Gueydan are linked by the Cajun Corridor that crosses the parish to reveal quaint towns, farmland, waterfowl, tree lined bayous, attractions that tell the story of our multi-cultural heritage, numerous locally-owned eating establishments and much more.

If authentic Cajun cuisine and fresh seafood is what you’re craving, a trip to Vermilion Parish needs to be on your “to do” list! Here, you’ll feast on fresh seafood straight from our gulf waters or on Cajun favorites made the same way grandma made them from scratch. From over-stuffed po-boys and raw oysters to fresh boiled crawfish, shrimp and crabs, we have it all and more.  Several of our seafood restaurants feature live, local music on the weekends to enjoy while you dine and visit. In addition to Cajun and seafood, we also have Italian, Asian and Mexican cuisine. The only problem you’ll find, is that you may wish you had a bigger stomach!

As far as festivals go, we know how to throw a party and we celebrate everything from flowers, eggs, shrimp, cattle, ducks and more. Our annual celebrations feature music, food, arts and crafts and plenty of dancing in the streets! One of our parish’s unique events is Abbeville’s Giant Omelette Celebration, held the first full weekend in November. This event pays homage to our French heritage with Cajun music and food, a French mass and more. The celebration’s highlight occurs on Sunday afternoon with the cooking of the 5,000 plus egg omlette prepared in front of the Courthouse in a 12 foot skillet. It’s really a site to see!
