Crested Butte: Colorado's Coolest Ski Town

Welcome to the Gunnison Valley—home of legendary downhill skiing, breathtaking mountain views and Colorado’s coolest mountain towns.
Locals and visitors compare spending time in Crested Butte to being in a snow globe. Brightly painted historic buildings on Elk Avenue beg to be photographed. Snowy mountains tower over town. The famously steep ski area, Crested Butte Mountain Resort, perches atop the iconic pointed peak of Crested Butte. It feels like reality has been suspended in favor of something more magical.

The main activity in Crested Butte is alpine skiing—and it doesn’t get much better than this. Crested Butte Mountain Resort is famous for its dizzyingly steep double-black zones, but there is a wide variety of terrain for skiers of all ability levels. If the skiing doesn’t take your breath away, the stunning Rocky Mountain scenery will.
Cross-country skiing is another popular form of skiing in Crested Butte. Dozens of miles of scenic, groomed trails are accessible from downtown. With millions of acres of pristine public lands here, it feels like you’re in the wilderness when you’re just a stone’s throw from town.

Twenty-eight miles south of Crested Butte is Gunnison, an easygoing college town with a heart for outdoor sports. Many of the bars and restaurants downtown have the same theme—bikes. You might not think of biking as a winter activity, but it is here! Rent a fat tire bike and ride the groomed trails at nearby Hartman Rocks for a day.
