How Texas Children's Fetal Center® changed fetal spina bifida treatment in the U.S.

10 years ago, Texas Children’s Fetal Center® set a new standard of care with a novel approach that brought hope to families facing spina bifida.

Presented by Texas Children's Hospital June 13, 2024

A prenatal diagnosis of spina bifida can leave expecting parents feeling lost. This neural tube defect (NTD) affects the baby's spinal development, potentially leading to paralysis, developmental delays, and other lifelong challenges.

At Texas Children's Pavilion for Women, physicians, specialists, and staff understand the immense pressure families face. As long-time national leaders in treating spina bifida, the Fetal Center at the Pavilion for Women offers both parents and referring physicians the most advanced care available.

Revolutionizing spina bifida treatment with minimally invasive surgery

Traditional spina bifida repair requires a large incision in the mother's uterus, increasing risks for preterm birth and uterine rupture. But Texas Children’s is always seeking to improve outcomes and decrease risks. In 2014, they became the nation’s first to perform a new type of fetoscopic closure—a pioneering, minimally invasive procedure using 2 small ports to do the neurosurgical repair.

This innovative technique uses a tiny camera (fetoscope) and just two small incisions to repair the defect. Remarkably, fetoscopic repair offers the same benefits as traditional surgery (improved leg function and reduced fluid buildup in the brain) with significantly lower risks for both mother and baby.

Why choose Texas Children's Fetal Center® for spina bifida care?
