Whether you're building from scratch or renovating, working with a licensed architect is crucial to bringing your vision to life. To help you navigate the process, we’ve gathered insights from industry experts, including Mark Schatz of m +a Architects, who is co-chair, and also has a home on the tour this year, and Rame Hruska, whose project is featured on this year’s AIA Houston Home Tour, as well as AIA Houston Executive Director Rusty Bienvenue and Home Tour Co-Chair Victoria Goldstein.

Choosing an Architect
A licensed architect ensures your project meets both aesthetic and structural standards. They also introduce new concepts that focus on health, wellness, sustainability, and functionality, with the goal of balancing current trends with timeless principles.
When selecting an architect, review their portfolio, check credentials, and read reviews. Bring this information to interviews so you can find a firm that aligns with your goals.
The result: a beautiful home that will stand the test of time.

"An architect's role goes beyond just drafting plans; they are your creative partner in transforming your ideas into a cohesive, functional design," says Rusty Bienvenue. "Architects blend your vision with practical solutions, ensuring your home enhances your lifestyle while reflecting both current trends and timeless principles. Our office is a great resource for finding qualified architects, and this year's Home Tour is a perfect opportunity to meet them and see their work up close.”

The Design Process
Effective communication between you and your architect is crucial at all stages of the design process. From concept to blueprint, your architect develops plans considering sustainability, budget, and local codes. This collaboration helps guarantee your vision is met while allowing for creative flexibility.
"Collaboration is the cornerstone of any successful project," says Rame Hruska. “Our tour project combines site-built construction with prefabricated elements, enabling us to leverage both technologies to meet specific project goals. We are in the process of adding an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) to this home, which will be delivered later this fall as a prefabricated unit. This approach minimizes disruption to the site and the client's lifestyle, as the unit arrives complete and only needs to be tied to the permanent foundations and connected to utilities."

"Upfront communication with the client is essential to understanding overall objectives," Hruska adds. "Working in a design-build format allows for a more integrated, collaborative, and seamless transition between design and construction, providing more control over the budget and aligning with client goals. Project budgets are one of the first topics we discuss, and clear communication is critical to meeting expectations as we move through a project.”

Bringing the Vision to Life
Once you and the architect have determined the ideal design for your space, you’ll be able to work toward all the final details including obtaining permits, choosing materials, and preparing for construction. Once you break ground, your architect will visit the site to ensure the design is executed accurately. This is the most exciting part: where you get to see your dreams become a reality.

“The design process is truly a journey from concept to completion," says Mark Schatz, FAIA, Home Tour Chair and Principal at m + a Architecture Studio. "During the final stages, when construction starts and details come together, the vision takes shape. This phase requires meticulous attention and constant communication to maintain design integrity. Seeing a project evolve from drawings to a finished space is incredibly rewarding for both the homeowner and architect."

Victoria Goldstein adds, “The design process is multilayered, and licensed architects synthesize those layers to meet client needs and streamline the building process. We use a range of tools—from sketches to virtual reality—to help clients see the outcome, making architects invaluable to any successful design project."
