Fall has arrived! Wait, no, it’s gone again.
Lucky for those who live there, work there, or visit its many flourishing businesses, the Spring Branch Management District is home to a variety of outdoor parks and walking trails providing the perfect setting to spend time with family and friends.
Whether walking or riding along the Spring Branch Trail, taking the kids to burn off energy at a playground, or leading the dog for a short walk to a “pocket” park right there in the neighborhood, take advantage of those infrequent crisp days by visiting one of the Spring Branch District’s many public and free outdoor areas.
Spring Branch Trail
The second phase of the long-awaited Spring Branch Trail is nearly complete with a ribbon-cutting and celebration to be scheduled for sometime in early 2025!
Notable features of the Spring Branch Trail include neighborhood trail connections at Gessner, Triway Lane, and Shadowdale Drive, as well as a connection to Harris County Precinct Three’s existing Emnora Trail, which is from Gessner to Northbrook High School.
The Spring Branch Trail is part of a larger vision that proposes connecting the Addicks Reservoir to White Oak Bayou Greenway with an 11-mile hike-and-bike trail through the heart of Spring Branch.
The Spring Branch Management District provided funding for the project as part of its 2015-2030 Comprehensive Plan with the Houston Parks Board serving as the project manager. James W. Lee Park, 9147 Autauga St.
Located in the heart of the beautiful Binglewood neighborhood, James W. Lee Park is a true neighborhood gathering spot.
Named after “Jimmy” Lee, who grew up in Binglewood and was tragically killed in a car accident in the 1980s, the park is a testament to Jimmy’s love of nature and conservation and features a playground, picnic tables, walking trails, and dog-friendly areas.
Schwartz Park, 8203 Vogue Lane
Gather a group to play soccer or practice your tennis swing at Schwartz Park, where you can also access the Spring Branch Trail. Large trees provide shade for children playing on the playground. There is also a basketball court, a swimming pool open in the summer months, a softball field, a baseball field, a walking trail, picnic tables, and more.
“Schwartz Park is a hidden gem,” one reviewer said on Yelp.
Agnes Moffitt Park, 10645 Hammerly Blvd.
Close to the western border of the Spring Branch District, Agnes Moffitt Park is a community green space dotted with trees and featuring a disc golf course. The park has also been reviewed on Yelp: “Lots of greenery, really nice during the cooler temperature months.”
Also at Agnes Moffitt Park is the “High Plains Drifter” sculpture by Peter Reginato. Unveiled in 2018, the sculpture is worth a visit. Maybe bring a picnic lunch from any of the District’s amazing eateries and eat while gazing upon the work of art!
Moritz Pech Family Park, 1493 1/2 Moritz Dr.
The land that is now Moritz Pech Family Park was originally solely a water retention area, according to the Spring Oaks Civic Association. At that time, it was unsightly but has now been completely transformed into an area for families to gather and the community to enjoy.
The park features a playground and picnic tables, as well as a winding trail perfect for pups.
Freed Park, 6818 Shadyvilla Lane
Freed Park and Freed Community Center are located in the heart of Spring Branch East and both recently underwent renovations. Enjoy the large gymnasium with pickleball and basketball courts, meeting spaces, community garden, playground, volleyball court, baseball/softball field, soccer field, an outdoor chess area, and a half-mile paved walking and riding trail.
Campbell Woods Park, 9623-9627 Crestdale Dr.
Small, shaded, and simple, Campbell Woods Park is known to be a great spot to bring little ones to play on the play set or maybe kick a ball. If quiet is what you are looking for, this is the place.
Nob Hill Park, 10300 Timberoak Dr.
The paved 0.6-mile multi-purpose trail at Nob Hill Park is the perfect path to walk while the kids ride their bikes or maybe get in a quick jog. There is also a picnic area and a children’s playground.
Pocket Parks
Don’t sleep on the area’s “pocket parks,” a little bit of green space providing a respite from city life.
Two to check out include Bauer Pocket Park, 2201 Bauer Dr., and
Housman Pocket Park, 6705 Housman.
Haden Park, 1404 Witte Rd.
New plans to redevelop Spring Branch District’s Haden Park won a Natural Areas Planning Award presented by the Houston-Galveston Area Council (H-GAC).
The Spring Branch District and SWA Group have collaborated on the plans alongside the community.
