Faces of Rice Village: At Kelsey-Seybold, Dr. Michael Leung Brings Generations of Care to the Heart of Houston

Dr. Michael Leung has been practicing obstetrics and gynecology for more than 30 years. But it wasn’t until recently that he truly felt the impact of that longevity: a young woman came in for an appointment, only to realize he had delivered her at birth. His name was right there on her birth certificate.
Moments like that are exactly why Dr. Leung loves his job. The power of human connection was something he’d grown up with, living in a small West Texas town where his father was a doctor at a family practice. Leung remembers, “Wherever we went—like to Luby’s after church—people would come up to my dad and say, ‘Oh, Dr. Leung, you delivered my son, or you delivered my daughter!’ I think that stuck with me.” Both he and his sister followed in their father’s footsteps, becoming OB-GYNs and continuing that tradition of care.
Dr. Leung has patients who have been with him since his residency. “They’ll say, ‘Do you remember my daughters you delivered? They're 19 and 21 now.’ It’s incredibly rewarding and it’s a privilege to be part of my patients’ lives through so many stages,” he says.

He joined Kelsey-Seybold Clinic in 2005, a cornerstone of Houston’s renowned Texas Medical Center. With more than 1000 providers spanning over 65 specialties and subspecialties, the ambulatory health system is a powerhouse—but one that, in Leung’s words, still has a small-town feel. “It's a very big organization, but in my mind, it’s kind of like Houston,” he says.
“Houston is a big city that doesn’t feel big. There are little niches where you get that homegrown, friendly feel. Kelsey-Seybold is like that, too.”
Now Associate Chief and Managing Physician for the Central Region OB/GYN Department, Dr. Leung appreciates the Kelsey-Seybold ecosystem and its seamless, integrated care model. “We offer care that is connected in a variety of specialties—from primary care, including pediatrics, adult medicine, to specialties like cardiology, endocrinology, as well as hematology/oncology. If you need an outpatient procedure, we've expanded our surgical capabilities and are able to offer this level of care at more locations across the Houston area.” It’s a robust system that’s convenient, cost-effective, and efficient. As Dr. Leung puts it, it allows the physicians to concentrate on what matters most, “seeing patients and practicing medicine.”

At the Kelsey-Seybold Clinic in Rice Village, a team of board-certified Gynecology and OB/GYN specialists delivers comprehensive, evidence-based care for women at every stage of life. “We offer everything that a patient might need from the time they are a teenager to starting families and beyond,” says Dr. Leung. Services include preconception counseling, prenatal and postnatal care, birth control, menopause management, telehealth, labs, and preventive care.
That last one is key. With Mother’s Day on the horizon, Dr. Leung reminds patients not to put their own health on the back burner. “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. You have to take care of yourself before you can care for others, right?” he says. “I see patients who neglect their own well-being to look after kids, aging parents, or others. But self-care has to come first.”
He recommends an annual well-woman exam as a springboard for meaningful conversations. “Today’s patients are incredibly savvy. It’s no longer a top-down relationship—it’s more of a conversation, more collaborative. We’re here to listen, support, and find a path forward together.”

And the clinic’s location certainly doesn’t hurt. “Rice Village is the perfect place for us. It’s a place where you have everything you need. There are great restaurants and bars, shopping, gyms—it just makes sense for us to be part of this community,” says Dr. Leung. “Our model of care is to support preventive healthcare and to help [our patients] feel good and live meaningful lives.”
On a personal level, working in Rice Village has been a full-circle moment. “I came to Houston in 1994 for medical school at Baylor College of Medicine. Afterward, I stayed here for my residency at Memorial Hermann Hospital and then met my wife in residency. We went to Rice Village all the time, so getting to work here now, being a part of Rice Village’s storied traditions—it’s a dream come true,” Leung says.
With its modern setting and convenient perks—like two hours of free reserved garage parking just steps from the clinic’s door—Kelsey-Seybold Rice Village makes prioritizing your health feel effortless. “Get your care, then enjoy the day,” says Dr. Leung. “Grab lunch nearby, swing by one of the many shops—there’s so much right here. It’s Houston’s (maybe not so) best-kept secret.”
