Houston Choral Society returns with a season that celebrates music, legacy, and community—and it’s hitting all the right notes. The 80+ voice ensemble draws singers from across Greater Houston and a wide range of professions, making HCS a true reflection of the city: diverse, ambitious, and vibrant. Under Artistic Director Dr. Kevin Klotz, the choir delivers everything from sweeping classical works to syncopated jazz.

“Our 2025–2026 season is a celebration of people, history, and legacy,” says Dr. Klotz. Promising a rich mix of emotional and inspiring music, highlights include an October opener honoring women composers with Elaine Hagenberg’s Illuminare and Heather Sorenson’s Requiem, both moving audiences from darkness to light in a profoundly stirring experience. The season also features the winners of HCS’s nationwide Choral Composition Competition, a March concert marking America’s 250th anniversary, and a commissioned world premiere by acclaimed composer Michael John Trotta in May, honoring Dr. Klotz’s decade of leadership.

A particularly thrilling moment arrives this fall, when HCS will perform Sorenson’s Requiem at New York’s Carnegie Hall, conducted by Dr. Klotz himself. The invitation, extended personally by the composer, marks another prestigious milestone for the choir, following its memorable Carnegie debut in 2018.
Back home, HCS stays deeply rooted in the community, collaborating with local orchestras and student ensembles, including the Houston Christian University Choirs, and Byrd Elementary Honor Choir, which joins this year’s Christmas concert. Beyond the stage, the group brings music to hospitals, nursing homes, and even Astros and Space Cowboys games.

For singers like board member Joan Marchelli, the experience is deeply meaningful. “A concert night with the Houston Choral Society will always be rewarding and soul-lifting,” she says. With live orchestral accompaniment for nearly every program, the choir creates a lush, resonant soundscape that immerses audiences in both drama and joy. “Dedicated. Accepting. Communal—that’s what makes HCS so special,” she adds.
Children under 12 attend free, Christmas concerts include caroling and a visit from Santa, and every program is designed to engage both newcomers and longtime supporters.
