Houston's Holiday Tradition A Christmas Carol Returns to Alley Theatre
For decades, Alley Theatre's A Christmas Carol has been a cornerstone of the Houston holiday season, bringing families and friends together to experience the timeless magic of Charles Dickens' beloved tale. This year, the tradition continues, promising a theatrical feast filled with festive spirit, beloved music, and captivating performances.
This new adaptation, originally crafted by Artistic Director Rob Melrose, seamlessly blends the classic story with vibrant new elements. Audiences are instantly transported to 19th-century London, complete with stunning, intricate sets, lavish Victorian costumes, and lively party scenes. Adding to the enchantment are the beautiful a cappella renditions of favorite traditional carols, which fill the stage with the joyous sounds of the season.
Resident Acting Company Member David Rainey returns as Ebenezer Scrooge for the ninth time at the Alley. He is joined by an exceptional cast featuring fellow Resident Acting Company members and several Houston local actors. The production is helmed by Alley Artistic Associate Amber D. Gray, who returns as director after a successful remount in 2024.
“To create a new production of A Christmas Carol from scratch is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity... This year, I’m happy once again to hand over the reins for remounting the show to Alley Theatre’s Artistic Associate Amber D. Gray. She did a lovely job remounting it last year.” — Rob Melrose, Artistic Director
As the Alley's new Managing Director, Jennifer Bielstein, shares, "It feels especially meaningful that my first production at the Alley is A Christmas Carol, a beloved tradition that has brought Houston families and friends together since 1989. Sharing this annual celebration is a wonderful way to begin my journey here."
A Christmas Carol is more than just a play; it is an annual reminder of the true meaning of the holidays: generosity, redemption, and hope.
Performances run through December 28. Tickets available at alleytheatre.org/carol
