16 Ways to Embrace Coral in 2019
As purple's reign nears its end, the color experts at Pantone have selected the shade that will color our next 365 days: Living Coral. Described as "animating and life-affirming," the pinkish-orange shade with golden undertones represents sustenance (as coral reefs are to sea life), warmth, and comfort, all necessities in what Pantone calls "our continually shifting environment."
Essentially, the Pantone Color Institute wanted to cheer us up. It's true that so much has happened this year—for proof, look no further than this quiz—and we the people could use a little buoying as we face the year ahead.
"The Pantone Color of the Year selection is more than a culmination of recent color trends—it is a reflection of a concerted cultural moment," Pantone says in its announcement. (Other options ultimately passed on: Blue Wave, Russian Red, and Tide Pod Challenge—the latter a combination of blue and orange, two Colors of the Year a la 2016's Rose Quartz and Serenity.)
"Living Color encourages immersive, playful experiences," Pantone says. "In shag rugs, cozy blankets, and lush upholsteries, the hue evokes a feeling of warmth, comfort, and nurture in the home. The color's ebullient nature lends itself to dramatic pops of color as well—through decorative accessories."
The same can be said for beauty. It's easy to envision pops of coral enlivening cheeks, lips, and nails, particularly through Pantone's collaboration with cosmetics brand Butter London on an official Color of the Year collection including Living Coral nail polish (both matte and glitter), blush stick, and lip gloss.
