At first glance, it was a trunk show—standard fare for fine jewelry purveyors like I W Marks, one of Houston's original family-owned and operated jewelry stores in Bellaire since 1978. But the Dec. 14 event actually served triple duty: showcasing the stunning designs of customer-favorite designer Kimberly McDonald, yes, but also functioning as a birthday celebration for social butterflies Joanna Marks (who runs the store with husband, Brad) and Hannah McNair (fellow philanthropist and husband to Texans CEO Cal) and a fundraiser for local Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP).
Holiday shoppers-turned-party guests all enjoyed birthday cake and a champagne toast, plus elegant jewels from McDonald, and I W Marks donated 10 percent of all proceeds from the trunk show to CAP, who brought along one of its dogs available for adoption.
McDonald's gems were on full display, and her sustainably sourced collections—founded in a principle of "creation without destruction"—have earned some seriously high-profile fans since she began designing in 2007. Among them: former FLOTUS Michelle Obama, Cameron Diaz, Cindy Crawford, Joan Burstein, and more.
I W Marks is the exclusive Houston retailer for McDonald's collection, and each piece is hand-crafted so no two are the same—meaning the lucky locals who got one under the tree this year can rest assured their gift is truly one-of-a-kind and went toward a good cause.
