AFTER A YEAR OF VIRTUAL ceremonies, the annual MTV Video Music Awards took place in person yesterday, September 12 at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center in New York City. In trying to revert back to “normal life,'' the red carpet was reintroduced for our favorite celebs.
While it’s the 4th quarter of 2021, yesterday’s looks were a blast from the past. Crossover glam featuring monochrome and draped dresses were among the highlights of the night, along with bedazzled garb and vintage homages. And of course, stars like Travis Scott, Simone Biles and Dallas native Jaden Hossler were in attendance, while Normani graced the stage with a bonus performance.
Here’s who won big at last night’s awards:
Houston rager and Houstonia’s (animated) fall cover star, Travis Scott, made a quick advent across the red carpet wearing a blacked-out suit with matching boots, paired with diamond jewelry and his signature braided look. Sitting next to Grammy award winning singer Billie Eilish, he later won the moon-man for Best Hip Hop Video for his track "Franchise," also produced by Houston-based DJ OG Chase B. The future-dad-of-two gave a shout-out to his daughter Stormi in his acceptance speech.
Gold medalist super athlete Simone Biles graced the carpet in a blush one shoulder gown accented with a thigh high slit. With wanded long tresses, Biles paired her look with statement hoops. Viewers also got a double take of the gymnast when she introduced pop sensation Doja Cat.
One of the most raved about looks of the night was Houston popstar Normani. On the red carpet, the singer smized at the cameras wearing an early 00s, futuristic set designed by London brand Patricia Pagas. The all-white ensemble featured a broad shoulder scrunched jacket, paired with a wrap skirt that tailed the front left leg.
Later that night, the pop star graced the stage performing her latest single Wild Side featuring Cardi B. Continuing the cyber theme from her red carpet appearance, Normani wore metallic pants paired with a chrome mini top. The dance number took on a steamy direction tapping in R&B singer Teyana Taylor to close the performance off.
