A great barbershop has to ace the classic looks. That’s a given. Whether you go in looking for a French crop, buzz cut, or hi-top, you have to come out looking good. Then, too, a great barbershop has to be plugged into what’s new. They have to innovate. Once in a while, they have to take a risk. The stylists at Current Cuts on Eastex Freeway know this, and they’ve been proving it for 30 years. They’ll go on proving it, too. But now, it’s time to celebrate a road well-traveled.

Today only, past and present customers, stylists, friends, and admirers will convene to reminisce and make merry at a 30th anniversary bash hosted by City Acre Brewing at 3418 Topping Street. Complimentary food and drink will be served between 3–8 p.m., and the mingling alone promises to be worth the trip—a lot of stories tend to accumulate after 30 years, and you can count on hearing a few good ones.

Current Cuts owner Jason O. Roland is gratified to have reached his milestone moment. “When I took over this business from my father as a young man in 1999, I had no idea Current Cuts would continue to grow and create so many opportunities,” Roland said. “My father had a grand vision for Current Cuts, and it has not only been fulfilled, but has exceeded his and my expectations.”

There’s no shortage of love for the northeast Houston fixture, which started in 1987 as a three-chair barbershop and has bloomed into an H-Town staple, catering to everyone from folks who wander in off the street to high-profile celebrities and Houston athletes.

True to his shop’s name, Roland isn’t content to rest on his laurels. He’s planning to open a third location in 2018 and is hard at work on developing a mobile app. His philosophy is satisfying in its simplicity: “We have to stay ‘Current,’” he said. With 30 years as one of Houston’s best barbershops in the bank and exciting plans on the horizon, there’s little doubt he won't.
