The end is near for Ibiza Food & Wine Bar, a Houston stalwart that focused on offering wine at affordable price points. Co-founders Charles Clark and Grant Cooper have announced the restaurant will close after service on Feb. 15, 2020.
When Ibiza opened in 2001, restaurants in Houston weren't offering wine at near-retail prices, but the Midtown restaurant changed all that. Ibiza succeeded thanks to its ingenuity, plus its menu of chef-driven food with global influence.
“Since 2001, we’ve made it a point to create a vibe and experience at Ibiza that has kept our customers coming back,” said Cooper. “We have regulars that eat with us at the same table. We’ve seen our customers have families and their kids have kids. We’ve created a family at Ibiza with our employees and guests. We’ve made it a point to interact with our guests, give them good food that we would want to eat, show them our favorite wines at reasonable prices—and they’ve kept coming back.”
The co-founders built on their success at Ibiza by opening more restaurants, namely Coppa Osteria and Punk's Simple Southern Food in Rice Village, The Kitchen at the Dunlavy at Buffalo Bayou Park, and Brasserie 19 in River Oaks, along with Catalan, which closed in 2011 because of the departure of then-executive chef Chris Shepherd.
Clark and Cooper plan to focus on those existing concepts after Ibiza closes, while looking ahead to new projects. One of them is the dinner expansion of the Dunlavy, coming January 2020.
