Crazy Like a Fox

Artist Mark Fox transforms words into drawings and drawings into sculptures.

Tomorrow morning, New York artist Mark Fox opens his second solo exhibition at the Hiram Butler Gallery. The hanging sculpture behind him in the photograph looks metallic, but is actually composed of aluminum-gilded paper.

"A lot of my work has to do with how the reflected light changes as you walk by the sculpture, or walk around it," Fox says.

This piece, like many in the exhibition, was inspired by Jane Jacobs's landmark book "The Death and Life of Great American Cities," which champions urban density. Earlier works in the series were based directly on New York City's rectilinear street grid.

Gallery assistants install the first two pieces of what will be a triptych of stainless steel panels hanging from the ceiling. Fox created the sculpture by painting root-like lines onto a large piece of paper and then using a laser to cut the resulting piece.

Fox is best known for his word sculptures, in which he copies a found text by hand, cuts the words out with a razor, and glues them back together to form a three-dimensional jumble of intersecting lines.
