Magazine People are their own special breed. They can spot a cover photo shot by Mario Testino at 10 paces, ogle an art layout like it's a Playboy centerfold, rapturously recall bylines of note and actually look forward to checking their mail. You definitely want to invite them to all your parties—especially if you like conversations that begin "I just read this fascinating article..."—but might want to think twice about helping them move, as a true magazine connoisseur could no more throw out a beloved issue than a book of family photos.

Thirty Magazines has created pop-up shops inside New Living and Saint Cloud.

After a few dark years following the shuttering of Issues, the Magazine Person's natural habitat, Houston is once again becoming a hospitable environment for magazine lovers. The latest start-up aiming to connect interesting and visually arresting publications with insatiable readers is pop-up magazine store Thirty Magazines.
Thirty Magazines is the brainchild of architect Evan O'Neal along with his business partner, acclaimed interior designer Gin Braverman, and graphic artist Tyler Swanner. The group has partnered with local stores including New Living on 19th Street and Saint Cloud to set up stylish racks of curated independent titles covering art, architecture, design, food, fashion, literature and science from across the globe. Each set-up will hold issues tailored to the profile of the store, with most holding 30 titles, hence the name.
Thirty Magazine's latest partnership launches on Tuesday with a stand inside Rice Village boutique Saint Cloud that will be up throughout the rest of December and January, and both parties are celebrating with an evening of cultured cocktails from 7 to 9 p.m. (If you need an extra push to get your holiday shopping done, this is it.)
If you're looking for the ultimate gift for the Magazine Person in your life, consider a Thirty Mags' mystery subscription ($75), three hand-selected, coffee-table quality magazines picked up from across the globe and delivered monthly along with other goodies and surprises.
